Catterline: from the Watch House

Catterline: From the Watch House

"This is a pastel and pencil sketch from my Catterline sketchbook, drawn from the Watch House looking across the bay to South Row cottages at the top of the cliffs. To the right, a path, known locally as the brae, winds down to the beach. It was a bright sunny day with blue sky, blue sea and screaming sea birds."

Sketching is a vital part of the artistic process of seeing: exploring form and texture...

Catterline: Red-hot pokers
Catterline: Red-hot pokers

"Another Catterline sketch drawn in very soft pencil. The garden and the cliffside at the Watch House were full of red-hot Pokers, which were in various stages of flowering. I really liked their strong sculptural forms."

Norfolk: sunflowersNorfolk: Sunflowers

"A sketch from the fields around my studio in Norfolk, where there are many patches of sunflowers grown to provide food for the wild birds. I am particularly fond of sunflowers – they are so cheerful when they are flowering but also just as interesting when they begin to wither and dry, and form magnificent seed heads. This was drawn in water-soluble pencil with pastel. In my sketches and my paintings, I strive to capture their quirky character rather than produce a botanical illustration."
